Donald Trump released a video today from “The Desk of Trump” that was aimed at President Obama. In case you don’t want to watch the ramblings in the above video, Trump informed the president that if he released his college and passport applications and records, then Trump would donate $5 million to a charity of Obama’s choice within an hour of the release of the records. The records would have to be public by Halloween.
The first question this brings to mind is—really? We are still on the citizenship thing? Donald Trump made Obama’s citizenship a hot issue in 2011, prompting Obama to release his official birth certificate to the public. With the release of the documents, however, Trump and his adherents failed to be satisfied. They questioned the validity of the document, tearing apart everything down the origin of the Social Security number assigned to Obama. In his video, Trump rants that, “Mr. Obama has been the least transparent president in the history of this country. There has never been anything like it”, going on to say that he is, “very honored to have gotten him to release his long form birth certificate—or whatever it may be.” Obama’s release of these new records will lead to absolutely no resolution for Trump and his followers. Obama released his actual birth certificate, and Trump continued to doubt his citizenship, and now is publically asking for further proof. If anyone believes that the release of these records will lead to anything other than more doubt, then they are dead wrong. The point of this challenge is to bring the theme of mistrust back into the swing voter’s minds, hence the “by October 31st” deadline.
This new deal is completely insane. Donald Trump framed the challenge to the President as a way to get rid of skepticism that “many many people” feel about Obama’s citizenship, and that this is a “win-win” situation for both the President and the American public, making Trump more than happy hero, graciously fronting the $5 million to such a humanitarian cause. This is a ploy to make Obama look suspicious for not releasing his records, because if he had nothing to hide, why wouldn’t he want to help a charity by proving something that should be easy? However, Donald Trump himself has quoted his net worth at about $7 billion. $5 million to him is not exactly a huge sacrifice, and could easily be made as a donation to many causes rather than one that hinges on the President proving something he shouldn’t have to.
Overall, this video is absolutely ludicrous, and while I strongly suspect the Obama campaign will choose to completely disregard it, let’s hope that they do.
