As a participant at the 99 Rise protest on 9/28 at Bank of America I feel it is our duty to keep Occidental students informed on what our fellow classmates have done to support this movement. At this event, 8 protestors were arrested- 2 current Oxy students and 2 Oxy alums.
99 Rise is an organization that strives to get corporate money out of politics. Their basic mission is to build “a nationwide movement waging nonviolent struggle to get Big Money out of American politics.” Whether you agree with their cause or not (and you probably do because 75% of Americans think that money buys results in Congress) I think the dedication that these Oxy students and alums have shown deserves recognition and proper appreciation.
The bank was tipped off that the protest was coming. Upon my arrival the manpower of the cops and private security teams may have even outnumbered the protestors. However, these 8 people were able to get into the bank and deliver a petition for Bank of America to disclose its political expenditures. This request was denied and the 8 sat down and refused to leave. They were arrested as all of us outside the bank cheered them on.
The 8 have now been released.
